Women's Empowerment Program – Sakhi

MEL Women Empowerment Project was initiated to empower rural women. Launched on April 5, 2009, it is an initiative to help uplift women in rural Tamil Nadu by financially enabling them through a micro-finance scheme. The SHGs formed and facilitated by MEL has given these women promising job opportunities.

Beyond the tangible positive impact on their lives, there has been a paradigm shift in the way these women now make decisions. With the expertise and support of local NGOs, women enrolled in the initiative have become equal members of their households. The initiative is now being called Sakhi, which also looks into women’s wellbeing efforts.

Since its inception, Rs. 235.46 lakhs have been arranged for SHG loans from NABFINS (financial wing of NABARD) and various nationalised banks with the help of NGOs. So far, nearly 1178 SHG members were benefitted through this program.

Stakeholder Quote

  • For a long time, I was idly sitting at home, and my family members were solely dependent on my husband, who is a daily wage worker. After joining MEL Women’s Empowerment Project, I was exposed to various livelihood programs. I wanted to start making doormats at home. My husband helps me after work and I now earn Rs. 4000/- through this initiative. Thanks to Malco Energy for showing me a way to improve my life.

  • As a Muslim woman, my life was only within my family till I joined the SHG run by MEL. I have realized that life has so much meaning and there are a lot of opportunities. I have attended the rexine bag preparing and the beautician training organized by MEL. Now I stitch the bags at home and work as a beautician. Now my husband appreciates my efforts and supports me in selling the bags and procuring the raw materials.
